Meadows Landscape Nursery: Growers

As a growing local retail and wholesale nursery, our goal is to provide plenty of small plants that are reasonably priced, easy to transport, and easy to plant...as well as a nice selection of large landscape specimens that will make an immediate statement. We have a wide selection of trees grown in our Root Pouch root pruning pots, and we have an increasing number of varieties of trees grown in the field in RootMaker field bags, all with a strong, ready-to-take-off root system.

Many of our plants are propagated from cuttings, seed, and division right here at Melport Meadows. Other items are brought in as young stock and grown out until ready for their new home in a landscape. We also bring in already finished stock, and Larry makes trips to Tennessee, Michigan, Northern Minnesota, and Oregon every spring to personally bring back bare roots, liners (young plants ready to grow out), and containerized stock.

There are availability pages here on our website under "Inventory." There is a lot of info there, including bloom times, sun/shade needs, deer/rabbit resistance, fall color, and much more.  At this point, everything that we're growing is listed, but everything that is listed is not necessarily ready to be planted out in a landscape.  Inventory pages are updated for the coming season in February, so new items or sold out items (or crop failures!) may not be reflected in the listings. Many of our plants are available in various sizes. We wish we could include sizes, numbers available, and prices...but all of this is more than we can keep up with as a small family nursery.

Generally, our Quart & 1-gallon shrubs are priced at $9.97, 2-gallon shrubs are priced at $15.97, and 3-gallons at $26.97. Trees, Evergreens, and Branded/Patented plants are a few dollars more. There are also a multitude of larger plants of all types and sizes. We also have a good selection of Proven Winners Shrubs....3 gals are usually priced at $29.97. Larger 3-gallon plants, such as many of our extensive selection of hydrangeas, are $39.97.  In May we have many young Proven Winners plants available in QT pots for $15.97.

We have trees priced similarly to the shrubs in 5 to 25-gallon root pruning pots. There is an increasing selection of RootMaker(tm) trees from the field awaiting new homes, and some others in plastic that we bring in as needed to round out the selection. Check out our varieties of the tab under "Inventory."

We also have a huge selection of perennials, including ornamental grasses, daylilies, hostas, and peonies. Quart Perennials and Herbs at $3.97, Half Gallon Perennials/Herbs at $4.97, and Gallon Perennials/Herbs at $6.97; 2-gallon perennials at $7.97; Ornamental Grasses and Daylilies are $9.97 in 1 gal non-patented with other options available; Hosta varieties are $7.97 to $15.97. Most Peonies are priced at $26.97. Clematis is $15.97 - $29.97.

We have all types of edibles, from fruit trees to berry plants and bushes, and from grapes to asparagus.

WE OFFER A 10% DISCOUNT ON ALL ORDERS OF $500 OR MORE.

All of this takes time (not to mention a bit of that paper-green stuff!) to get new things growing. We're constantly adding new varieties. Let us know if there's something you'd like to see us offer, or if you want us to see if we can find it for you. The earlier you place a request for special orders or quantities of a single plant, the better the chance we will be able to grow or locate it for you.

Melport Meadows Landscape Nursery: Our Growing Methods

Most of our trees and shrubs are being grown in above-ground root pruning bags. We've found that our growing methods are very helpful in overcoming many of the problems associated with growing plants in containers. Sometimes, a tree will fail after it seems to be establishing well in the landscape. This is often due to tangled roots inside the containers that the tree grew in. Eventually, the growing roots strangle the tree.  Our root pruning pots avoid this scenario.  Trees grown with root pruning methods have myriads of outwardly-facing, actively-growing root tips ready to establish themselves quickly once planted, with very little setback time.

Our larger specimen trees are grown in the field in in-ground RootMaker™ containers.  These trees are dug with a track loader fork and can be lifted any time there is not a serious hot/dry spell.  RootMaker trees keep over 95% of their roots, are ready to grow with minimal setback time, and can be handled without heavy equipment.  Contrast this with extremely heavy balled and burlapped trees, which leave 90% of their roots in the field, and suffer seasons of setback.

The advantages of the above-ground containers are:

  • Plants develop dense, fibrous root systems.
As roots grow out through the container, they are pruned off by air contact, stimulating many new feeder roots to develop.
  • Roots cannot circle the pot.
  • Better protection from winter cold.
  • Keeps roots cooler in summer heat.
  • Allows air and water to freely pass, helping prevent root rots.
  • Plants can thrive, growing to a larger size in a smaller pot.
  • Eliminates transplant shock.
  • Allows a recently potted plant to be planted into a landscape without suffering from having its roots disturbed before becoming established in the potting medium.
  • Plants are poised to grow when planted in the ground, with myriads of actively growing root tips ready to grow out into the surrounding soil.
  • Most (but not all) of our above-ground fabric pots are degradable.
  • Plants in degradable pots can be planted without completely removing their containers, though, for best results, we (and now the manufacturer) recommend taking them out. Additionally, there is no coiled, pot-bound mess that needs to be untangled before planting.

Additional benefits of RootMakerâ„¢ in-ground bags are:

  • Root pruning takes place by means of constriction rather than air pruning.
  • Trees do not require a tree spade to harvest.
  • Trees keep 95% of their root system, as opposed to balled-in-burlap trees, which leave up to 90% of their roots in the field.
  • Trees can be dug any time of year that the ground is not frozen, as long as it is not during a time of extreme heat or drought.
  • Root balls are much lighter and easier to handle than balled-in-burlap.

Environmental Benefits of the Degradable Bags - Root Pouchâ„¢:

  • Pots will break down in landfills.
  • Made of 100% recycled materials.
  • Leaves a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Reduces the number of plastic water bottles entering landfills.
  • Does not require one drop of new "fossil" fuel to create.

Melport Meadows Landscaping

We began as landscapers before we were growers, beginning with community service jobs as Master Gardeners and then progressing to other farms, homes, and businesses in the area. The most well-known work that we've done is the Cashton Village Garden next to the Community Center: we invite you to take a stroll down the cobbled path and enjoy the gardens next to the community center. Visit our landscaping page for more info on our offerings, including landscape design and tree planting services.

We've also partnered up with Jordan Glanzer at Tri-State Landworks to provide expanded services, including retaining walls, new lawns, re-grading and land drainage solutions, and parking lot and driveway construction.

As landscapers, we've especially enjoyed our "re-landscaping" niche....taking a home with overgrown foundation plantings and giving it a modern, easy-care makeover. We install curved, mounded beds, a couple of specimen plants, and a team of supporting plants, complete with a thick layer of mulch. All of this, including removing the old plantings and a complete clean-up, is wrapped up into one simple price.

Melport's Display Gardens

We have several garden areas with plants labeled so we can see how our plants perform as they actually grow out in the landscape. You are welcome to tour these. We continue to add new areas with the goal of having as many of our varieties as possible growing in our display gardens. Strolling around the grounds, you can see how the plants will look as they mature.

Our History

Lisa (that's me!) and my daughter Anna took the Master Gardener course as part of Anna's high school curriculum. In the process of doing the required community service, and then our first paying job, which was to design and install the Cashton Village Garden in Cashton after the new Cashton Community Center was built, we began to get requests to do landscaping for local homes and businesses.  As we continued to do more and more landscaping jobs, we thought it would be much easier if we could grow the plants we like to use in our landscape projects rather than having to search for them. The opportunity seemed to present itself in early 2014 when Earl, my father-in-law (then 92 and a recent widower), expressed a willingness to help me get started.  My husband Larry is now also very involved in operating the nursery.  I've dubbed him "Larry the Tree Guy"!  He will help you choose the right trees for your needs or help you plan the layout of a larger tree planting project, and if you need delivery or planting services, Larry the Tree Guy is your guy!
